Sanaa responds to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar's initiative and issues a call to Sisi regarding Yemen

The Yemeni Scholars Association in Sana'a announced its support for the initiative of Sheikh Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb to end disputes and wars, calling for the formation of a committee to receive an Al-Azhar delegation in Yemen and contribute to bringing viewpoints closer.

In a statement issued on Monday, the League said it appreciates the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar’s call to prioritize the spirit of brotherhood and religious ties among Muslims, and to work towards ending conflicts and preserving the unity and interests of the Islamic nation, affirming its readiness to engage positively with the initiative.

The League called for the formation of a committee of scholars, wise men and social figures in Yemen, to prepare for the reception of a delegation of Al-Azhar scholars, in order to facilitate the exchange of views, promote dialogue among Yemenis, and contribute to bringing viewpoints closer and overcoming differences.

The League urged all Yemeni parties to stand at an equal distance from the various powers, and to work to reduce escalation and unify ranks, considering that the continuation of the division allows the enemies of the nation to widen the differences and weaken the efforts aimed at addressing the crises.

The statement cited a Quranic verse calling for reconciliation between the conflicting parties, stressing the need for the proposed committee to be a nucleus for bringing positions closer and directing efforts towards addressing the general situation in Yemen.

The League also called for directing what it described as the nation’s military and economic energies towards confronting regional challenges, confronting Israel, which it described as “the most dangerous enemy to the nation’s present and future,” supporting Gaza, liberating Palestine, and restoring the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The League appealed to the Sheikh of Al-Azhar and its scholars to advise Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, urging him not to get involved in the aggression against Yemen, according to the statement.

The association confirmed that its call comes in response to the initiative of the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, stressing the importance of communication between scholars and religious institutions to bring viewpoints closer and prioritize dialogue over disagreement.

Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, called for the formation of an urgent mediation committee comprising respected figures from Arab and Islamic countries, with the aim of containing regional conflicts, bringing the viewpoints of the conflicting parties closer together, and working to stop the fighting and destruction and settle disputes through dialogue and understanding.

Al-Tayeb stressed that the continuation of wars and conflicts drains the resources of the peoples and threatens the security and stability of the region, calling on Arab and Islamic leaders to prioritize wisdom and bonds of brotherhood, preserve the sovereignty of states, stop the bloodshed and safeguard the future of their peoples, as Al-Azhar announced its readiness to provide the necessary support to the proposed committee and support its efforts aimed at achieving calm and settling disputes by peaceful means.

The call comes amid escalating regional tensions and ongoing crises and conflicts that threaten stability in the region. The initiative proposes a religious and mediation-oriented move that brings together Arab and Islamic figures to help bridge the gaps, but the announcement of the committee’s formation or the identification of its members does not mean that mediation efforts have actually begun.
