The journal Current Developments in Nutrition notes that, according to researchers from the College of William & Mary, consuming a daily serving of beans, lentils, or chickpeas can reduce the risk of heart attacks by nearly 20 percent.

The researchers reached these conclusions by analyzing data from more than 46,000 adults collected between 1999 and 2018 as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

They discovered that those who consumed at least one serving of legumes daily had a 19 percent lower risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases (heart disease, stroke, diabetes). Interestingly, legumes are virtually nonexistent in the American diet, with adults consuming less than 10.5 grams per day—a significantly lower amount than in other countries.

Tara Kamalakanta, who supervised the study, says: "I think this is a very important takeaway, as a person does not need to eliminate anything from their diet. They can simply start gradually adding legumes to it."
