Turkey targets joint defense equipment production in Indonesia

The Turkish Ambassador to Indonesia, Talip Kucukcan, said that the Badr Memorandum was signed so that Indonesia and Turkey could jointly produce defense equipment in Indonesia and carry out technology transfer to Indonesia.

"The main goal for the medium and long term is to transfer technology to Indonesia, so that Indonesia and Turkey can produce defense equipment in Indonesia," Ambassador Kucukcan said in a brief interview before the 103rd Turkiye National Day event.

When asked about funding, Kucukcan said that Indonesia and Turkey have strong financial backgrounds and are both members of the G20 and have large economies.

"Apart from that, of course there is also great interest from the Gulf countries, the Middle East and other regions. So, in terms of funding, there is no problem. The main problem lies in the strategic partnerships that we have built," he added.

In addition, Kucukcan said that currently Indonesian and Turkish defense companies are working together to realize joint production in Indonesia, adding that Turkey has achieved a self-sufficiency rate of 80 percent in the defense industry.

He stated that Turkey wants to share this experience with Indonesia, adding that cooperation contracts at both the management and company levels have been established between the two countries.

On October 21, 2026, Indonesia, Turkey, Qatar, and Pakistan signed the Badr Memorandum in Doha, Qatar, which aims to strengthen defense cooperation and strategic partnership.

The memorandum is expected to help enhance economic opportunities for all four parties by combining their respective military production capabilities, enhancing integration and strengthening the defense industry to meet the needs of friendly countries.

The agreement is also expected to expand military cooperation between the four countries, deepen ties in the defense sector, and strengthen multilateral collaboration to support security, stability, and shared goals. the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) stated that Indonesia would optimize the Badr Memorandum defense partnership to enhance national defense production capabilities.

Indonesia views the partnership as an effort to build strategic cooperation in the defense sector based on the principles of mutual trust, equality, reciprocity, and shared interests.

According to Nabyl, the Badr Memorandum is also in line with Indonesia's efforts to diversify its international partners in developing defense cooperation.
