Triathlon absent Indonesia loses chance of seven SEA Games gold medals

Triathlon absent Indonesia loses chance of seven SEA Games gold medals

The Indonesian Triathlon Federation  believes that the absence of triathlon from the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia means Indonesia will lose the opportunity to defend the seven gold medals it won at the previous edition in Thailand.

Based on an official statement from the FTI received in Jakarta on Wednesday, Indonesia became the overall champion in the triathlon and related disciplines at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, winning seven gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal.

The FTI believes this achievement demonstrates Indonesia's potential to compete for a gold medal again if the same event is contested in 2027.

The absence of triathlon is also considered to have the potential to affect the medal tally of the Indonesian contingent in the SEA Games general standings.

Triathlon and related disciplines have seen a rise in medals over the past three editions. At the 2021 Vietnam SEA Games, held in 2022, Indonesia won two silver medals and three bronze medals.

The achievement increased to one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games, then seven gold, three silver, and one bronze medal in Thailand in 2025.

Two of Indonesia's leading athletes, Martina Ayu Pratiwi and Rashif Amila Yaqin, each won gold medals in the women's and men's individual events at the 2025 SEA Games.

FTI views these achievements as capital to maintain the competitiveness of Indonesian athletes at the Southeast Asian level.

Although triathlon will not be contested at the 2027 SEA Games, FTI ensures that athlete development will continue with the goal of improving performance at Asian and world championships.
