Google has put all YouTube users on high alert after discovering a nasty new phishing campaign that could leave personal details, such as usernames and passwords, in the hands of hackers.
Most web users are well aware of fake messages, but what makes this new threat so troubling is that the fake email being sent around the world looks incredibly real even though the sender address indicates that it comes directly from YouTube.
If the user falls into the trap, malicious links within the message will direct users to a fake site where the data can then be stolen and used to attack accounts.
A copy of the malicious email has now been posted to Twitter by the TeamYouTube account.
The fake email, which is starting to appear in inboxes around the world, looks incredibly real with scammers trying to trick users into clicking on dangerous links by suggesting they block access to YouTube if they don't agree to the new terms.
The message states, "This email has been sent to notify you of our new monetization policy and new rules. Please use the link to download the document. Warning! You have 7 days to review and respond."
To make it sound more reliable, the email says it came from a sender called no-reply@youtube.com.
Scammers are often caught because the address does not match the contents of the message but that is not the case with this latest campaign. This is a serious threat, YouTube says: "Alert: We are seeing reports of a phishing attempt coming from sender called no-reply@youtube.com The sender is being careful. Do not download/access any file if you receive this email." .
If a similar address appears in your inbox within the next few days, delete it without delay as the temptation to click on links could put your personal information at serious risk.
