A team of scientists has discovered new breakthroughs that could enable batteries to be charged in just minutes.

New innovations in battery chemistry and designs have made it possible to charge batteries in five minutes, while maintaining stability during long-term use.

One project from Cornell University found that indium (a material often used to create layers for displays and solar panels) could allow batteries to be charged quickly and maintain their storage.

Indium contains a special composition that allows it to charge quickly, but without losing this charge.

In a research paper entitled “Fast charging and long-term storage in lithium batteries” published in Joule magazine, the scientists said  that the new discovery could make the batteries smaller and more efficient, especially when compared to other technologies such as built-in road charging.

However, they note that there is more work to be done: indium is heavy, so it may be better to find another material that has some of the same properties but without the weight.

Fast-charging batteries could transform a wide range of industries, including electric vehicles. 

“If you can charge an electric car battery in five minutes, you won't need a battery big enough to travel 300 miles,” said Linden Archer, an engineering professor and dean of Cornell University's College of Engineering, who oversaw the project.

As such, a wide range of projects are being implemented to try to speed up the shipping process. The new research came at the same time that engineers from the US Energy Administration's Brookhaven National Laboratory discovered another innovation that significantly improves the charging rate of batteries.

The researchers found that adding a compound called "C nitrate" to part of the battery significantly improves the charging rate of lithium metal batteries, while allowing them to maintain a long cycle life.

The team behind this achievement is part of the Battery500 consortium, a collaboration between labs and universities looking to create batteries with an energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram – more than double what is available today.

This would not be possible using lithium-ion batteries like those used today. Instead, scientists will have to use lithium metal batteries, which have much greater energy density, but face major problems including a clear choice between fast charging or batteries capable of having a long life.

The new work on these batteries was recently published in the journal Nature Communications.

He points out that the scientist has not invented a neural chip that constantly maintains the efficiency of the human brain.

He says: “Today, all chips implanted under human skin eventually become covered with scar tissue. Experiments on monkeys showed that the chip initially actually allowed for controlling devices with the power of thought, but after a while the chip must be removed from the brain and a new chip must be inserted, because the efficiency "Contact goes down."

“Someone will emerge who will be many times more competitive than all the other devices and people with devices, because he will actually be able to interact with them directly, without the need for keyboards and other alternatives,” he says.
