Scientists in Australia have revealed a new way to treat the most lethal and aggressive forms of breast cancer, without harming normal, healthy cells, unlike chemotherapy.
The promising treatment targets triple-negative breast cancer, which represents approximately 15% of all breast cancer cases and is known to grow and spread relatively quickly even among young patients.

In this regard, scientists reported that the promising drug in question, CDDD11-8, was developed in 2022 to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (AML), in which cancer cells grow and spread by increasing protein production, especially via a pathway called cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9).

The US Food and Drug Administration has not approved any drug that inhibits CDK9 yet, although one version has shown initial clinical benefits.

However, CDDD11-8 was initially developed by University of South Australia scientists to selectively inhibit CDK9. When tested in animal models, the oral drug “acutely inhibited tumor growth” and contributed to “improved survival of animals with leukemia.”

Now, the same drug is showing promising results in treating triple-negative breast cancers as well.

In light of the new study, breast cancer expert Theresa Hickey, from the University of Adelaide, who led the trials, says: “It is an exciting development in the battle against triple-negative breast cancer. The results show that the treatment could hold the key to improving survival rates.”

The research team believes that targeting CDK9 could also work in treating other aggressive cancers.
