A paralyzed Chinese man can write hieroglyphs using neural implants

A 76-year-old paralyzed Chinese man was able to write hieroglyphs using neural implants implanted in his brain.

This was reported by the Zhongxinshe news portal, citing scientists at Zhejiang University in China.

According to specialists, the device decoded the signals in the patient's brain and transmitted an appropriate command to a mechanical arm that wrote hieroglyphs on the blackboard. The accuracy of the neural implant's recognition of the Chinese characters whose images were represented by the man participating in the experiment reached about 91%.

As a university spokesman pointed out, such research in the future will be able to help a large number of patients with limited mobility. In particular, they will be able to control the power of thought in exoskeletons that are being developed for patients who have lost their ability to move.

It is noteworthy that Nature Medicine magazine had previously reported that a team of Russian and American neurophysiologists were able to restore the ability to walk to a paralyzed man by implanting electrodes in the damaged part of the spinal cord.
