Many of us follow a daily routine that involves cosmetic products, often expensive, to maintain a healthy-looking skin as we age.

Experts point out that diet can provide the necessary nutrition to keep the skin fresh and tight.

Nutrition expert, Jennifer Hanway, presents the three most important nutrients for the skin to have a strong appearance, which she recommends for those aged 30 and over.

Amino acids

As people enter their late 20s, collagen production slows, Hanway explained to MindBodyGreen.

Collagen provides the structure of skin, muscles, bones and connective tissue.

Collagen production can be boosted by making sure you get enough amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein.

She explained that as we age, the body “doesn’t prioritize the skin as an essential organ, unlike the brain, heart or lungs. So, if we eat minimal or even enough protein, the body won’t be able to give those extra amino acids to our skin.” Or our hair or nails to keep them looking healthy.”

Hanway recommends consuming one or two grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. “For most women, 100 to 120g is a really good starting point,” she points out.

Omega 3

As people age, their skin barrier weakens, and internal stressors such as inflammation and nutrient deficiencies can damage the skin, as can external factors such as sun exposure and pollution.

“Eating foods rich in these nutrients is something you can do to help slow the aging process,” holistic plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Yoon told MindBodyGreen.

Marios Morariu, a nutrition expert, stresses the importance of consuming omega-3 fatty acids found in some fish, some vegetable oils, and nuts, saying: “Powerful omega-3 fatty acids not only benefit your skin, but also your brain.”

Adding: “Many people are afraid of fats, but they are very important and very useful.”

Research has shown that taking omega-3 supplements can help balance the skin's inflammatory response.

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10, more commonly known as CoQ10, is an antioxidant naturally produced by the body that supports cell growth and maintenance. It protects fibroblasts, cells that produce collagen and elastic fibers that contribute to youthful skin.

Taking CoQ10 supplements has been shown to reduce wrinkles and improve skin smoothness.
