President of the Moroccan Council of Advisors: Islamophobia is a dangerous phenomenon that threatens the values and foundations of our union

Al-Naam Mayara, President of the Moroccan Council of Advisors, said that the phenomenon of Islamophobia is one of the most dangerous phenomena that threaten the values and foundations of our union.

Mayara added in his speech during the opening of the 52nd meeting of the Executive Committee of the Union of Councils of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Tuesday that the phenomenon of Islamophobia has witnessed a dangerous escalation in recent years, as we recall here, with strong condemnation, what some individuals have done in terms of burning and desecrating copies of the Holy Qur’an.

He stressed that "this matter requires us to be vigilant, firm and coordinated to confront these offensive transgressions with the strength of our adherence to the principles of dialogue and tolerance between religions and cultures, openness and respect for others."

In this regard, he stated that Morocco is involved in many initiatives that aim to contribute effectively to establishing the foundations of coexistence and dialogue among civilizations, including the initiative of King Mohammed VI before the Eleventh Islamic Summit held in Dakar in March 2008, and the launch of the Rabat Action Plan in 2013 regarding the prohibition of calls for national or religious racial hatred that constitute incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence.

Mayara also referred to the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly, with a unanimous vote of 193 countries, in late July of last year, of a resolution submitted by Rabat regarding the promotion of dialogue between religions and cultures, and the promotion of tolerance in order to combat hate speech.

He stressed that Morocco's strong engagement in supporting dialogue between cultures and civilizations is also evident in its hosting of many specialized meetings and forums, such as the Ninth Global Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations, which was held in Fez, and the work of the International Parliamentary Conference on Religions in Marrakech in June 2023.
