India to become major iPhone supplier to avoid China import tariffs

Jakarta - Apple is considering importing more iPhones from India to avoid high additional tariffs on imported goods from China, as announced by United States (US) President Donald Trump last week.

The Wall Street Journal report said the move was seen as a short-term solution by Apple while it tries to negotiate with the Trump administration to get an exemption from the tariff policy, as reported by Tech Crunch on Thursday.

Apple has no intention of overhauling its global supply chain, which currently relies heavily on China.

In comparison, while the new tariffs on Chinese-made goods are 54 percent, the US is only proposing a 26 percent tariff on goods imported from India.
