Neurologist Dr. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya explained that stroke can affect even young people, stressing that early recognition of its symptoms is crucial to saving lives.
According to the doctor, there are two main types of stroke:
Hemorrhagic : It occurs as a result of a blood vessel rupturing and bleeding into the brain tissue.
Ischemic (85-90% of cases): This results from blockage of a blood vessel by a blood clot or cholesterol deposits.
The doctor emphasized that both types of strokes interrupt blood flow to brain tissue and require urgent medical intervention to save the patient.
Main warning symptoms:
Sudden, severe headache (different from a regular headache) that does not respond to pain relievers and is aggravated by light
Nausea and vomiting
severe dizziness and disturbed consciousness
sudden difficulties in speaking or understanding speech
Weakness or numbness on one side of the body (with loss of sensation in the extremities)
Facial asymmetry (such as a half smile)
Visual disturbances (double vision or temporary blindness, even if transient)
Hallucinations or convulsions in some cases
Even if symptoms improve quickly, you should immediately go to the nearest specialized medical center, as every minute of delay could affect your chances of recovery.
“Although young people experience the same obvious symptoms of stroke, they often ignore or downplay them, often attributing them to stress or fatigue rather than seeking immediate medical attention,” Dr. Demyanovskaya warns.
She adds: "Those around the patient often misinterpret these symptoms, especially among young people, and assume they are merely poisoning. However, this misdiagnosis can be fatal, as delaying appropriate treatment for a stroke can lead to serious complications such as permanent paralysis, permanent speech impairment, and even respiratory failure."
Preventive tips provided by the doctor:
Regular monitoring : Check blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly.
Healthy lifestyle : eating a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity
Giving up harmful habits : Completely quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.
Weight control : Maintaining a healthy BMI
The doctor emphasizes that following these preventive measures significantly reduces the risk of stroke, especially among those most at risk.
