Syria: We welcome the Human Rights Council's resolution welcoming the fall of the regime and commending the establishment of the new government

.

This came according to what Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani stated in two posts on his X account, as well as a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Al-Shaibani said, "I welcome the first resolution of the Human Rights Council after the fall of the regime, which welcomed its downfall, focused on its crimes, commended the establishment of the new government, addressed economic sanctions and Israeli violations, and acknowledged our local and international efforts to protect human rights, despite the challenges, difficulties, and legacy of the former regime."

He added, "We appreciate the efforts of countries, civil society organizations, and victims' and survivors' associations who have worked tirelessly over the years to keep the rights of Syrian men and women a priority in all forums. We particularly appreciate the role of the UK government."

The term "penholder" is used informally to refer to the UN Member State responsible for leading the formulation of resolutions on a particular issue.

Al-Shaibani added, "We are proud of Syria's positive and constructive participation in drafting the resolution for the first time."

In a statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry explained that the decision came "after extensive consultations during the current session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, and within the framework of Syria's new approach at the international level."

The statement continued: "The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs engaged constructively and effectively, both during multilateral meetings with the participation of UN member states, and bilaterally with the main sponsors of the draft resolution, namely the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Qatar, and Turkey."

The Syrian Foreign Ministry commended "the constructive approach and positive cooperation demonstrated by member states and the core group during the process of drafting and adopting the resolution," and praised Britain's role as the "nation of the pen."

She expressed her "deep appreciation for the efforts of states, civil society organizations, and victims' and survivors' associations who have worked tirelessly over the years to keep the rights of Syrian men and women on the international community's agenda at the Human Rights Council."

The Foreign Ministry affirmed its country's "firm commitment to promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Syrian people, in accordance with its relevant international obligations."

It also affirmed its readiness to continue "positive and constructive dialogue and cooperation that serves the interests of the Syrian people, preserves Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and enhances its security, stability, and prosperity."

On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions completed their control of the country, ending 61 years of rule by the collapsed Baath Party and 53 years of control by the Assad family, including 24 years during which Bashar al-Assad held the presidency (2000-2024).
