Syrian Foreign Minister Meets with Russian and Turkish Representatives to the United Nations

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in posts on Telegram that Al-Sheibani met in New York with Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, and Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ahmet Yildiz.

She added that Al-Shibani also met in New York with Karla Quintana, head of the Independent Foundation for Missing Persons in Syria.

The ministry did not provide details about the discussions during these meetings, but noted that Al-Shibani also met with a delegation from the Syrian Jewish community.

She explained that "during the meeting, the importance of strengthening bridges of communication and understanding was discussed, and issues of concern to members of the community and their cultural and historical ties to their homeland were addressed. The importance of their role in the reconstruction process was also emphasized."

This comes a day after other important meetings Al-Shaibani held in New York. He met with China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and UN General Assembly President Philomon Yang.

His meetings on Monday also included UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi, and UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu.

Al-Shaibani arrived in New York on April 25, where he participated in the ceremony of raising the new Syrian flag in front of UN headquarters. He also participated in a Security Council session held to discuss the situation in his country that same day.

The Syrian authorities are seeking international and regional support to help them address the repercussions of ousted President Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule (2000-2024), amid calls to lift sanctions on Damascus because they "prevent the country's renaissance."

As a result of these efforts, the United States and the European Union partially eased their sanctions on various sectors in Syria, amid hopes of a complete lifting of these sanctions to achieve development in the country.

On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions completed their control of the country, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family control.
