CATL reportedly to start EV battery production in Indonesia in March 2026

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (Wamen ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung said that CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer from China, is targeted to start producing electric vehicle or EV batteries in Indonesia no later than March 2026.

"They (CATL) expect that by March 2026 at the latest, production will begin in Indonesia," said Yuliot when met at the ESDM Ministry Office, Jakarta, Friday.

The statement was related to the meeting between Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir who discussed the follow-up to the investment plan for an integrated electric vehicle battery ecosystem in collaboration between Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) in building a battery cell factory in Indonesia.

Yuliot said that CATL's investment continues in Indonesia with a capacity of 15 GWh. Initial production in 2026, said Yuliot, has a capacity of 7.5 GWh or half of the agreed capacity.

"This first stage has received approval (from the Chinese Government) for 7.5 GWh," Yuliot also said.

For the next 7.5 GWh, funding will come from an IPO or Initial Public Offering, so that later, the 15 GWh capacity can be realized.

Yuliot also revealed that CATL already has offtakers or buyers of production results from Europe and the United States.
