"The United Nations will continue to support state institutions in Syria to achieve a successful political transition," Pedersen said in posts on the X platform following meetings with several Syrian ministers in Damascus, according to SANA's website.
He added, "I held a fruitful meeting in Damascus with Justice Minister Mazhar Al-Weis, where we discussed the importance of judicial reform in Syria." He noted that Al-Weis briefed him on "the efforts undertaken in this area, highlighted existing challenges, and emphasized the need for support from the United Nations and international organizations."
Pedersen added, "I held a constructive meeting with Minister (of Interior) Anas Khattab, during which we discussed security sector reform and the recent organizational restructuring within the ministry." He noted that Khattab "provided insights into the current challenges facing Syria and the ministry's efforts to promote a stable security environment across the country."
Pedersen considered that "safety and security are essential pillars for ensuring a comprehensive and smooth political transition in Syria." He also described his meeting with Education Minister Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko as "constructive and fruitful."
He stated that Turko briefed him on the multiple challenges facing the education sector in Syria, the ministry's strategic plans for moving forward, and the need for support. The UN envoy called for "the need for continued strong international support for Syria, including from the United Nations system."
He stressed that Syrian youth "deserve access to high-quality education and the opportunity to contribute to building a better future."
The new Syrian administration is looking for international and regional support to help it address the repercussions of ousted President Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule (2000-2024).
On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions completed their control of the country, ending 61 years of brutal Baath Party rule, including 53 years of Assad family control.
On January 29, 2025, the new Syrian administration declared Ahmed al-Sharaa president for a five-year transitional period.
