Xabi Alonso says Bayern deserved to be German league champions.

Bayern Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said Bayern Munich deserved to be crowned German League champions for the 34th time, after they were crowned champions following his team's 2-2 draw at the Europa-Park Stadium against Freiburg.

This result leaves Leverkusen on 68 points in second place, and with two games remaining, they are no longer able to surpass Bayern's eight-point gap in first place.

"Congratulations to Bayern. It's a deserved championship. They were the more consistent team throughout the season and they deserved it," said Alonso, who won three Bundesliga titles as a Bayern player and once as a coach at Leverkusen, as quoted by the official AFP website on Monday.

The title is the first for manager Vincent Kompany after he arrived from Burnley last summer. It is also a special one for Harry Kane who has been waiting for his first major title in his professional career.

Kane himself was among a group of Bayern players gathered to watch Leverkusen's game in Munich on Sunday. After officially collecting the trophy, Kane posted a trophy emoji on his official Instagram.

The England captain was previously suspended for the 3-3 draw with RB Leipzig, but could return to action against Borussia Moenchengladbach at home, where they will be presented with the Bundesliga shield.

Meanwhile, after failing to win the league title, Leverkusen's focus will turn to retaining Alonso and Florian Wirtz, who could both leave in the summer.

Alonso has a contract at Leverkusen until 2026 but has been heavily linked with Real Madrid, while Wirtz, whose contract expires in 2027, has been linked with a move to Bayern.
