Dasco says revision of Election Law will not be discussed during this session

Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad revealed that the revision of the Law on General Elections will not be discussed during the current session, which starts on June 24 to July 24, 2025.

Because, he said that the political party factions in the Indonesian House of Representatives are still discussing the revision of the law only informally. According to him, the discussion cannot be conveyed to the public.

"Because if we convey something that is not yet final, it will create unnecessary dynamics," said Dasco at the parliament complex, Jakarta, Thursday.

He said that this was the first time the Constitutional Court had decided that there should be constitutional engineering for the revision of the Election Law. This means, he said, that the revision of the Law cannot be processed in a hurry.

In addition to being something new, according to him, this constitutional engineering also requires opinions from experts who understand constitutional matters. Therefore, he ensured that the Indonesian House of Representatives would be careful in implementing the Constitutional Court's decision.

The Constitutional Court Decision Number 62/PUU-XXII/2024 mandates the elimination of the provisions on the minimum threshold for presidential and vice presidential nominations or the presidential threshold in Article 222 of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections.

However, in its legal considerations, the Constitutional Court provided five guidelines for lawmakers, namely the government and the DPR, to carry out constitutional engineering so that the number of presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs does not increase.
