Golkar Party DPP Secretary General Muhammad Sarmuji hopes that the Indonesian government will call on the two parties involved in the conflict in the Middle East, namely Israel and Iran, to exercise restraint and prioritize the path of peaceful negotiations.
He said the call was to increase Indonesia's diplomatic role in the international arena due to the latest escalation of the conflict between the two countries, which is increasingly endangering regional stability and global peace.
"Indonesia must call on all conflicting parties, both Israel and Iran, to immediately stop military escalation and resolve the issue at the negotiating table, not through violence or war that only leaves destruction," said Sarmuji in a written statement in Jakarta, Friday.
Sarmuji emphasized that as a country that adheres to an independent and active foreign policy, Indonesia has a moral and constitutional mandate to take an active role in encouraging peaceful resolution of various international conflicts.
He also expressed deep concern over the latest escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Tensions have been high after an Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian nuclear scientists and injured an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran launched more than 100 drones towards Israeli territory, in one of the most overt military responses in a long time between the two countries.
