Abbas calls for empowering the Palestinian Authority to assume its responsibilities in Gaza. Hamas and Islamic Jihad say any negotiations must lead to an end to the war.

Abbas's remarks came during his meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair at his residence in the Jordanian capital, Amman, according to the official Palestinian news agency, WAFA.

Abbas said what is required is "an immediate ceasefire, the release of all (Israeli) hostages and (Palestinian) prisoners, and ensuring the unhindered entry of urgent humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip."

He stressed that "the only viable solution is Israel's complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, enabling the State of Palestine to assume its full responsibilities in the Strip, with effective Arab and international support."

Meanwhile, Hamas and Islamic Jihad affirmed on Sunday that any indirect negotiations with Israel must lead to an end to the war of extermination in Gaza, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Strip, the opening of crossings, and reconstruction.

This came during a meeting held by delegations from the two movements' leaderships to discuss the latest political and field developments, according to a Hamas statement. The venue was not specified.

The movement said its delegation was headed by Mohammed Darwish, head of the leadership council, while the Islamic Jihad delegation was headed by the movement's secretary-general, Ziad al-Nakhalah.

According to the statement, the two delegations reflected on "the enormous sacrifices of our people and the human suffering resulting from the war of extermination and starvation, and the daily scenes of massacres at the hands of the Zionist enemy." They emphasized that "any negotiations must lead to the achievement of our people's goals, foremost among which are ending the war, the complete withdrawal of enemy forces, the opening of crossings, and reconstruction."

The two sides also discussed "the occupation's responses to the proposals presented by mediators to reach a ceasefire and ways to deal with them," and praised "the heroic performance of the Palestinian resistance and the extent of the losses inflicted daily on the ranks of the occupation army."

These positions come amid ongoing indirect negotiations in the Qatari capital, Doha, between delegations from Hamas and Israel, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, and with American participation. These negotiations aim to reach a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.
