Dozens of residents in the South Kembangan area, Kembangan, West Jakarta were forced to evacuate to the Attaqwa Grand Mosque because their houses were still submerged in floodwater.
A refugee named Mei, admitted to having settled in the refugee location since afternoon with her three toddlers. Until she was still staying in the mosque.
"We have been here for three nights since Sunday," Mei told reporters at the location.
Although it is quite difficult to take care of her three children, Mei is grateful that government assistance has begun to arrive. According to her, the local village head has distributed food and basic necessities to the refugees.
"Thank God, this morning the village head came here to provide assistance in the form of rice to the refugees," said Mei.
In line with Mei, another refugee named Zaki admitted that in addition to logistical assistance, refugee residents also received health services from the local health center.
"This morning, the Community Health Center also provided free health checks," said Zaki.
According to him, the assistance provided was sufficient to help ease the burden on the refugees, the majority of whom were children and the elderly.
"It's certainly quite helpful because our access is blocked by floods, so it's hard for us to cook, it's hard to do anything, so with the assistance provided, it definitely helps us a lot," said Zaki.
Until now, the refugees are still waiting for the water to recede so they can return to their respective homes.
"For now, staying here is the only option," added Zaki.
