Egyptian Foreign Minister discusses efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza with Arab counterparts12

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Abdel Aati held a series of calls on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, Bahraini counterpart Abdul Latif Al Zayani, Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf, Omani counterpart Badr Al Busaidi, Kuwaiti counterpart Abdullah Al Yahya, and Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

She explained that these contacts come within the framework of "regular coordination and consultation between Egypt and sister Arab countries."

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry added in its statement that Abdel Aati exchanged views with his Arab counterparts regarding the latest developments in the Gaza Strip.

According to the same source, Abdel Aati discussed during the calls "joint Egyptian efforts with Qatar and the United States to resume the ceasefire, release a number of hostages and prisoners, stop the bloodshed of the Palestinian people, and ensure the urgent flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip."

Since Sunday, indirect negotiations have been underway in Doha between Israel and Hamas in a renewed attempt to reach a prisoner exchange and ceasefire agreement, mediated by Egypt and Qatar and supported by the United States.

Tel Aviv estimates that there are 50 Israeli detainees in Gaza, 20 of whom are still alive. Meanwhile, more than 10,800 Palestinian prisoners languish in its prisons, suffering torture, starvation, and medical neglect, many of whom have died, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights and media reports.

In early March, the first phase of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel, which took effect on January 19, 2025, was concluded. The agreement was brokered by Egypt and Qatar and supported by the United States, and the Palestinian movement adhered to it.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by international justice, evaded the start of the second phase and resumed the genocide in Gaza on March 18, responding to the demands of the most extreme faction within his right-wing government to prevent its collapse and the loss of his position, according to the Israeli opposition.

According to the statement, Abdel-Ati reviewed the arrangements for Egypt to host the Early Recovery and Reconstruction Conference in Gaza once a ceasefire agreement is reached, in cooperation with the Palestinian government and the United Nations.

Egypt had previously announced its intention to call for an international conference to mobilize Arab and international financial support for the reconstruction of Gaza, once the ceasefire comes into effect.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with US support, has been committing genocide in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

The genocide left more than 195,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands displaced.
