Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid warned that artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to reinforce social bias and widen inequality if not developed and adopted ethically and critically.
"This reminds us that without a careful approach, AI can actually widen the gap and reinforce the biases we've been working to correct," Meutya Hafid said in South Jakarta on Thursday.
Meutya highlighted that the current development of AI technology is very rapid, even exceeding most people's expectations.
However, most of the AI systems in use today were developed in global north countries, with data and logic that may not be suited to the social and cultural context in ASEAN, particularly Indonesia.
This risks reinforcing the biases and inequalities that society has long been trying to correct.
