17 years ago, Nadal broke Federer's dominance to debut at No. 1.

Rafael Nadal has consistently been near the top of the ATP rankings since he began winning Grand Slam and ATP Masters 1000 titles in 2005.

The Spanish tennis legend spent 160 consecutive weeks at No. 2, while Roger Federer prevented him from reaching the top until 2008.

Nadal took the tennis world by storm in his first ATP Tour season, winning Roland Garros and four ATP Masters 1000 titles in 2005. He even won a career-high 11 titles that season. However, it wasn't enough to unseat Federer.

Three years later, he finally found the formula that took him to number 1.

On August 18, 2008, he surpassed his friend and rival from Switzerland to claim the top tennis title at the age of 22.
