2021 was the most violent year against minors; more than 37 were murdered: CEDHBC

Tijuana, February 2.- During 2021, more than 37 intentional murders of minors were recorded in Baja California, according to data from the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) submitted to the State Human Rights Commission (CEDH), revealed the president of this organization, Miguel Ángel Mora Marrufo.

"The official figure reported in institutions up to August 2021 was 37 children murdered, registered and officially recorded as institutional indicators. This leads us to believe that 2021 ended with more murders of minors under 18," explained the Baja California ombudsman.

He described the violence children experience in Baja California as worrying and attributed it to drug trafficking, but also to the fact that many minors face violence from their home environment.

He noted that although the State Human Rights Office does not keep a count of minors who have suffered gunshot wounds, as this is a matter for the State Attorney General's Office, he noted that there are hundreds of them in Baja California.

He mentioned that they are working on creating a link to obtain statistics and make the problem visible.

"The Commission is building a strategic link to present it to the Committee on the Rights of the Child in the Universal System because this behavior is worrisome, and it has to do not only with drug dealing and trafficking, but also with family dynamics. Many of these children have been victims of violence within their own families, and hundreds have been injured as well."
