Artists raise their voices in concert along the Costa Chica after 'Erick's' performance

Mexico City, August 10.—Music and performing artists will gather on August 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center for a charity concert aimed at supporting the Afro-Mexican communities of the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca and Guerrero, severely affected by Hurricane Erika.

The Concert for the Costa Chica, in El Cantoral, is an initiative convened by Susana Harp and Alejandra Robles, which seeks to raise awareness and funds for communities facing a humanitarian crisis, especially in Corralero, a fishing community where 95 percent of the population is Afro-descendant. Artists such as Regina Orozco, Horacio Franco, Astrid Hadad, Celso Duarte, María Inés Ochoa, Alejandra Duarte, and the group Alma Cimarrona, as well as Afro-Mexican dance companies, have joined this call.

“Hurricane Eric hit entire communities hard. Corralero was particularly hard hit. This concert seeks not only to provide economic assistance, but also to recognize the dignity and cultural richness of Afro-Mexican communities,” said Susana Harp. She also highlighted the importance of the constitutional recognition achieved in 2019 for these communities.

Singer and actress Regina Orozco commented: “The hurricane devastated homes, equipment, and lives. Music is what we know how to do, so we're going to put that at the service of the people. None of the artists will be paid a penny, nor will El Cantoral. All proceeds will go directly to the communities.”
