Mexicali, January 30. An attempted riot at the Mexicali Social Rehabilitation Center mobilized all security forces, while family members shouted to some of the inmates who were stationed at the prison windows to learn about the situation.
An unconfirmed report by authorities indicates that one inmate may have died, which allegedly sparked protests by inmates, who also loudly stated that they are fed up with the violence perpetrated against them by guards.
"Don't believe the authorities!" "The guards are being too harsh!" they shouted, and relatives asked about some of the inmates to find out their condition. One inmate's mother, who asked not to name her own name or that of her relative, said that just on Wednesday her son had said that "he was badly beaten."
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. this Thursday, prompting family members and the media to rush to the scene. However, minutes later, they were asked to leave the prison, forcing them to watch from one of the surrounding streets in the Pasadina neighborhood.
