BC government reaffirms commitment to legality and freedom of expression

Tijuana, August 18. The state executive branch, through Secretary General Alfredo Álvarez Cárdenas, stated its position regarding the summons sent by the State Attorney General's Office (FGR) to Mexicali journalist Dianeth Pérez Arreola to appear in connection with an investigation she is conducting.

In response to various media reports regarding the demonstration that occurred during the morning press conference last Wednesday, August 6, in Mexicali, Secretary General of Government Alfredo Álvarez Cárdenas stated the following:

1. The State Government's actions in this case do not constitute censorship or intimidation of the media, journalists, or communicators.

2. The sole purpose of the request to the Prosecutor's Office was to clarify, through all institutional channels, the journalist's claim that the aforementioned tender was awarded to a company that, according to her, was linked to organized crime.

4.- Furthermore, the state governor instructed the Anti-Corruption and Good Government Secretariat to launch a thorough investigation into the legality of the bidding process that ultimately awarded the contract to the company. The investigation began just over a week ago.

5.- In parallel, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) requested both the Secretariat for Water Management and Protection (SEPROA) and the Tecate State Public Services Commission (CESPTE) to provide all information related to the matter raised by the journalist. This has been fully completed to date, and the respective files are at the disposal of the FGR, which has indicated it will handle the information confidentially so as not to jeopardize the investigation.

6.- The seriousness of the accusation obliges us all to provide the elements to clarify the facts.
