Mexicali, August 18. There have been 19 intentional homicides in this city in August, bringing the total to 130 so far this year .
According to official figures, there have been 11 homicides of women, six of which have been classified as femicides.
Last year, according to the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), there were 221 homicide victims.
The head of the Municipal Public Security Directorate (DSPM), Luis Felipe Chan Baltazar, acknowledged that there has been an atypical wave of homicides in the capital since the end of July.
He mentioned that the last month with the highest incidence was January, with 23 murders.
However, in October of last year, 35 were committed.
The director of Municipal Public Safety mentioned that the increase in homicides is related to the struggle between the two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel .
Miguel Ángel Gaxiola, the prosecutor specializing in crimes against life, reported that 55 percent of murders in Mexicali are related to drug dealing.
