Ensenada, January 1. This January 1st , the abalone fishing season began , one of the oldest fisheries in the state.
This activity began in 1880 , with the incursion of people of Chinese origin, who had as their base of operations the city of San Diego, California, followed by Japanese divers, who carried out the collection equipped with diving suits.
It was in 1940 that Mexican
fishermen began to formally capture the mollusk , and in the middle of that year the first fishing cooperatives were established.
The agreement modifying the abalone closed season in Zone I, from the dividing line with the United States to Punta Malarrimo, Baja California Sur, was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on July 7, 2021.
In Baja California, abalone can be found from the Coronado Islands, on the border with the United States, to Cedros Island and the San Benito Archipelago.
Twenty-two organizations in Baja California depend on this activity , with more than 140 teams (boats), made up of a workforce of 420 fishermen, including divers, firefighters, and motorcyclists.
According to data from the Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sepesca), an average of 148 tons of canned fish have been extracted over the last three years, the main market being Asia.
