Deep reforms to the judiciary against crime are urgently needed: Monreal

Tijuana, February 24. The judiciary requires profound reforms because organized crime has made inroads into areas such as extortion, the collection of floor fees and quotas from agricultural and livestock producers, but especially in the imposition of municipal officials, which goes unreported out of fear, said Senator Ricardo Monreal Ávila.

Participating in the "Initiative for a Law Against the Crime of Extortion" forum held in Morelia, Michoacán, the leader of the Morena senators stated that "this is something that cannot and should not be silenced," according to a press release.

Legislators are responsible for updating the laws, he said, noting that nine out of 10 extortions go unreported out of fear. He mentioned that he will push for these reforms to be implemented at the federal level and recommended that they be followed in other states.

"It's a serious problem that Morelia is facing by updating the crime of extortion, including digital ramifications, prosecuting it ex officio rather than by reporting it, among other changes," he said, according to the bulletin.

He congratulated the Michoacán Congress and Executive Branch for the recently approved reform, which, he noted, "creates hope for things to improve."
