Fidel Herrera Beltrán, former governor of Veracruz, dies

Veracruz, Veracruz, May 2. Former Veracruz Governor  Fidel Herrera Beltran  passed away this Friday, May 2, at the age of 76.

Herrera Beltran governed the state of Veracruz from December 1, 2004, to November 30, 2010, and rose to that position as head of the Institutional Revolutionary Party. He also held other public offices, including Mexican consul in Barcelona, ​​senator, and federal deputy, among others.

In April 2020, Fidel Herrera was hospitalized after suffering a stroke, and his health had remained poor ever since.

In June 2024, Rosa Borunda, Fidel Herrera's wife, passed away. She is currently survived by her son, Javier Herrera Borunda, currently a federal deputy for the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico.

"A few hours ago, my father entered the sleep of eternity. And it will be eternal. He was an example of tireless struggle, honest leadership, and profound love," she said.

Fidel Herrera was born in the municipality of Cosamaloapan on March 7, 1949, and completed his primary education in schools in Veracruz and Oaxaca, always proud of his humble origins.

In 1971, he earned a Bachelor of Law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and in July 2007, he earned a Master of Law degree from the University of Veracruz.
