Governor announces inclusion of sign language in citizen services

Mexicali, May 30. Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda announced the incorporation of Mexican Sign Language (MSL) into the Single Citizen Service Model (MUAC), which she estimates will directly benefit more than 94,000 people with hearing disabilities in the state.

During her morning press conference this Friday, the state leader emphasized that this step represents a historic advance that "breaks down barriers of silence and tears down the invisible walls of discrimination, building bridges of respect, justice, and dignity." She also described it as "an unprecedented event at the national level."

The new system operates through WhatsApp video calls to the number 686 900 9091, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customer service is provided by certified Mexican Sign Language interpreters, allowing deaf people to complete procedures, resolve questions, and request information directly, the company reported in a press release.

In addition to the telephone channel, users can access the service through official social media and the state government website www.bajacalifornia.gob.mx, making the right to communication a tangible reality for everyone, he indicated.

It also works in person.

The system is currently also operating in person using electronic devices at key locations in Mexicali and Tijuana, such as the Labor Conciliation Centers, DIF offices, the Civil Registry, the Welfare Department, and the Zócalo 11 de Julio. It is planned to expand to hospitals and Revenue Collection offices in the near future.
