Gustavo Petro, the candidate for the Historic Pact coalition, triumphed in Colombia's presidential runoff election against Rodolfo Hernández, according to the preliminary count published by the National Civil Service Registry.
According to preliminary results, with 94.57 percent of the polling stations reporting, Gustavo Petro obtained 10,692,503 votes (50.69 percent), while Rodolfo Hernández reached 9,923,729 votes (47.04 percent).
At the same time, the blank vote reached 476,309 votes (2.25 percent) and the null option reached 256,215 votes (1.19 percent).
With Gustavo Petro's victory, Colombia will have a progressive government for the first time in its history, breaking the hegemony of conservative sectors.
