MC demands to set a maximum price for Covid tests

Mexico City, January 23.—The Citizen Movement faction in the Chamber of Deputies called on the Ministry of Economy (SE) to set a maximum price for COVID-19 screening tests and implement measures to prevent abusive practices in their marketing.

Meanwhile, in light of the sustained increase in COVID-19 cases in Mexico, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) urged the public not to let their guard down and to strengthen protective health measures to break the chain of infection, including the proper use of face masks.

Keila Cortés Arredondo, coordinator of Medical Programs at the IMSS Health Promotion Division, emphasized that it is necessary to comply with all of these protective actions (such as constant hand washing and disinfection, coughing or sneezing etiquette, social distancing, avoiding crowded places and gatherings), and not just some in isolation, in addition to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and the booster dose, since being immunized does not prevent contagion, but rather decreases the risk of developing severe symptoms that require hospitalization.

The Orange Party argued that screening tests in Mexico are expensive compared to other countries. The PCR test costs approximately 2,000 pesos, and the antigen test costs 600 pesos . In Spain, the maximum price for the antigen test was set at 2.94 euros, or less than 70 pesos, after a significant increase from 3 or 4 euros to between 10 and 15.
