Hamas agrees to a ceasefire proposal, and an Egyptian source: a temporary 60-day suspension that includes a prisoner exchange

Reuters quoted an Egyptian official as saying, "Hamas has agreed to the proposal submitted by mediators Egypt and Qatar, which includes a path to a comprehensive agreement to end the war."

The official added, "The latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza includes a temporary suspension of military operations for 60 days and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners for the release of half of the Israeli prisoners held in Gaza."

Meanwhile, Agence France-Presse reported on Monday that it had quoted an informed source in the movement, who spoke on condition of anonymity, as saying, "Hamas submitted its response to the mediators, agreeing to the new ceasefire proposal with the (Palestinian) factions, without requesting any amendments."

This comes as Egypt and Qatar affirmed on Monday their continued efforts to reach an agreement that guarantees an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza, stressing their rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their lands.

This came during a meeting between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Sisi, in the presence of Egyptian Intelligence Chief Major General Hassan Rashad and Qatari State Security Chief Khalfan al-Kaabi, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency. The duration of the Qatari officials' visit was not specified.

The presidential statement said that the meeting witnessed "a joint affirmation by both sides of the utmost importance that Egypt and Qatar attach to their ongoing efforts, in coordination with the United States, to reach an agreement that guarantees an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, allows for the urgent and unhindered entry of humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages (Israeli prisoners) and Palestinian prisoners."

Egypt's Cairo News Channel quoted unnamed sources on Thursday as saying that Cairo, which along with Qatar is mediating between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a prisoner exchange, "is intensifying its contacts with various parties to overcome points of contention and reach a truce agreement that would lead to an end to the war."

With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

The Israeli genocide left 62,004 Palestinians dead, 156,230 injured, most of them children and women, more than 9,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and a famine that claimed the lives of 263 people, including 112 children.
