San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chis., July 26.- Hundreds of migrants of different nationalities left Tapachula in a caravan this Monday to Huixtla to demand that the National Migration Institute (INM) provide them with documents that will allow them to travel to the northern border and cross into the United States.
They set out on the trek after waiting a week and a half for a response from the INM, without receiving one, said one migrant.
The contingent left Tapachula at 1:00 p.m. and, according to the organizers, is made up of 4,045 people, including 624 children.
In light of the departure of this new caravan, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) requested precautionary measures from federal and state authorities to ensure the care of the 1,700 people
who, according to the organization, make up this group.
We've said many times that we don't want to stay here; we simply want a permit to reach our destination." She called on all organizations to provide support, especially to the children who will be on the march, as they need water and other supplies to reach Huixtla, located 40 kilometers away.
He added that they only want the caravan to proceed peacefully, without problems or shouting, and with respect for their fundamental rights.
The situation for migrants in Tapachula is intolerable. We've waited for a response from Immigration, and they haven't come forward until 11:00 a.m. They say we have to go to the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) to make the request, but appointments aren't until November or December. But how are we going to be there until then? It's impossible. There are people who have no means of support, they're not eating, and all our human rights are being violated
