Impunity pacts: we are missing 43

On this occasion, the results of the third report delivered by the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) on the forced disappearance of the 43 students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers' College in September 2014 did not cause a national scandal. This time, in San Lázaro, there was no demand for a more in-depth investigation into the events to punish those likely responsible for the crimes committed against the teachers, but neither did the overwhelming outcry that many of us expected emerge: "It's over, it's over, the historical truth has over!" On this occasion, the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, did not receive the parents of the 43 at the National Palace, but neither did he wear a T-shirt during his customary morning press conference. Yes, on this occasion, the Army, the Navy, and the Attorney General's Office (FGR) maintained the deepest silence. A silence that hurts, injures, and offends.

How can we understand that during the previous administration, and during this one, information was withheld about the actions of the country's armed forces in a tragic and regrettable event that occurred in Guerrero?

How can we understand the disavowal of these events, the current Secretary of the Navy replacing them, from the presidential pulpit, with the same old narrative: these are the ideas of our adversaries? How can we understand the current President of the Republic's refusal to hold a former president accountable if, as supreme commander of the Mexican Army and Air Force, he must have been aware of the events that occurred on the night and early morning of September 26 and 27, and for which he likely made a series of decisions related to those same actions? What logic is there in all this? What explanation do the parents deserve, who, for more than seven years, have undertaken a tireless struggle to know the whereabouts of their children? Is there even the slightest possibility of showing a little respect to human intelligence?

Since the emergence of the GIEI in our country, those open secrets, whispered among neighbors, have taken on greater force and meaning. As is well known, the investigations by actors pointed to the involvement of police and military forces in the disappearance of the students. Today, "another truth" is emerging; a truth that has always been there, visible to all, but has not been revealed because the pacts with the military forces that maintain the known status quo are unlikely to open the Pandora's box of corruption and deceit, a hallmark of justice in our country.
