Tijuana, March 11. Medical staff at the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) held a demonstration against the dismissal of two nurses for their alleged responsibility in medical negligence , an incident their colleagues described as unjustified.
Carrying banners with phrases such as “ Sanctions, not dismissals ,” “We are not murderers,” “We are not the weakest link,” “We are the pillar of the hospital,” and “We are working under protest,” the hospital workers demanded that management provide them with legal advice and not fire their colleagues, as they are the breadwinners of their families.
The case in which they are allegedly at fault is that of Cecilia Morales Mejía, who died in January of this year after complications caused by gauze "forgotten" inside her body during gallbladder surgery at the HGR in June 2023.
Days after her death, the patient's family held a protest demanding justice from the authorities. At the time, they stated that they had already filed a complaint with the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) and also accused doctors Martín García and Antonio Tadeo of misinforming the family, as they had always stated that Cecilia was fine, despite her evident physical deterioration in her final months.
