Diogo Jota's number 21 jersey for the Portugal national team will be inherited by his former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Porto teammate, Ruben Neves, coach Roberto Martinez confirmed.
Jota made 49 appearances for Portugal and wore the number 21 jersey. He died along with his brother, Andre Silva, on July 3 after a car accident in Zamora, Spain.
Martinez said the close relationship between Jota and Neves made the 28-year-old midfielder the right man to represent the late Liverpool forward.
"We all know what Diogo meant to each of us and the impact he left on our lives," Martinez told by The New York Times.
"We want to honor his memory every day. He will always be with us and be an added strength to help us achieve our goals. Diogo's example is a light for us. We will carry his spirit in our hearts."
