Mexico City, July 10. Ana Lilia Rivera, President of the Senate's Board of Directors, affirmed that there is widespread recognition in the country of the need to transform the judicial system .
During a lecture he gave at the Military College, he explained that the reform of the Judicial Branch will allow for a more fair, transparent, austere, efficient, reliable, and accessible judicial system for all.
The legislator recalled that the goal is to reduce the number of justices from 11 to nine ; reduce their term of office from 15 to 12 years; and eliminate the two chambers into which the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) is divided, allowing it to operate solely in plenary sessions.
He said this reform aims to establish that the salaries of ministers and judges cannot be higher than those of the head of the federal executive branch.
Ana Lilia Rivera said the goal is also to transform the current Federal Judicial Council to make way for two new independent bodies.
Furthermore, he emphasized, a maximum period of six months is proposed to resolve the issues, and that federal entities reform their local legislation to guarantee the independence of magistrates and judges in the exercise of their functions.
