Member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Hinca Panjaitan, highlighted the Brimob standard operating procedures (SOP) for securing demonstrations or demonstrations following the incident of a Brimob tactical vehicle that ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver.
"Once again, we regret that this happened. Our colleagues in the police should have fully understood the standard operating procedures (SOP) and should have been able to assess the situation appropriately, as the vehicle (Rantis) is quite powerful. They should have been able to read the situation," said Hinca during a press conference at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Friday.
Based on the widely circulated video, he himself admitted to being surprised by the speed of the Brimob armored vehicle used when breaking up the demonstration, which resulted in an ojol driver being hit and dying.
"If you look at the speed, I've never seen someone push away a crowd that quickly. Usually, it's just slow, then it moves back, shifting (the crowd), that's what I saw," he said.
He also regretted the incident that resulted in the loss of the motorcycle taxi driver's life. He said the circulating video alone sparked public empathy for the victim.
"The video circulating shows that one angle is very fast, as I saw. I think we all felt the same. It's very regrettable. Why did that happen? It should have been slower," he said.
