Mexico City, October 28. The migration agreement between Mexico and the United States , which includes the transfer of Venezuelan migrants to Mexico, seeks to allow South Americans who wish to request asylum in the neighboring country to do so from wherever they are, whether in Mexico or another country .
Therefore, it is not necessary to enter Mexican territory or approach the northern border , said Roberto Velasco, head of the North American Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
" There's no need to arrive at the border to ask the United States to cross the border. In fact, the program envisions people requesting entry to arrive by air from wherever they are, " he explained in an interview with La Jornada.
He clarified that the guidelines presented by the United States indicate that those who arrived in Mexico after October 12 are ineligible to access the program. Similarly, those who arrived at the northern border would be excluded from submitting such an application . He maintained that there is no record of Venezuelans returning to Mexico before that date.
