Member of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives HM Taufan Pawe, stated his full support for the expansion of the General Elections Supervisory Agency's supervisory authority by advocating for a restructuring of the Election Law, unifying regulations on elections, regional elections, and election organizers in one law.
"I believe and have consistently advocated that Bawaslu at all levels should be given broader authority, be independent, and not be subject to intervention," Taufan said at a meeting on strengthening the Election Supervisory Agency's institutional structure in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Friday.
According to him, Bawaslu (Elections Supervisory Agency) needs to be strengthened, given its significant role in overseeing elections, including regional elections. Bawaslu could be given greater authority, including taking action against potential election and regional election violations.
Furthermore, Taufan stated that many issues were found in the evaluation conducted by Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives, which oversees election matters, including the chaotic implementation of the 2024 Simultaneous General Election and Regional Elections.
One of the evaluations is the Constitutional Court's decision to order a revote (PSU) for regional elections in 25 districts/cities in Indonesia.
According to him, the Constitutional Court's decision was largely due to election organizers not working according to standards.
"With the recent regional elections, the Constitutional Court issued a ruling ordering a re-election in 25 regions. If we examine the details of the Constitutional Court's ruling, it was largely due to the unprofessionalism of the election organizers," said the former mayor of Parepare, South Sulawesi.
