Artificial intelligence-based search engine developer Perplexity has submitted a cash offer to buy Google's Chrome browser for US$34.5 billion.
According to a report by technology publication Perplexity stated that the terms of the offer include a commitment to keep Chrome's underlying engine, Chromium, open source and to continue investing in it.
Perplexity's offer also includes a pledge to invest $3 billion in the development of the open-source project.
Additionally, Perplexity is committed to not changing Chrome users' default settings, including the primary search engine.
This means that Google will remain Chrome's default search engine instead of replacing it with Perplexity's artificial intelligence (AI)-based option .
Google could not immediately be reached for comment on Perplexity's offer.
The offer comes after the United States Department of Justice proposed in March 2025 that Google be forced to sell Chrome following a judge's ruling that the tech giant acted illegally by maintaining a monopoly in the online search market.
Google itself refused to sell Chrome and promised to fight the ruling.
A Perplexity spokesperson believes the court will soon determine the terms of the settlement, likely later this month.
Google is also facing another federal case. A judge ruled that the company illegally monopolized the advertising technology business.
The US Department of Justice is proposing that Google divest two advertising technology products or dissolve its advertising business.
When the US Department of Justice first proposed selling Chrome, both OpenAI and Perplexity expressed interest in buying it.
Chrome dominates the global browser market with a 68 percent market share according to Statcounter , so it's expected there will be plenty of bidding if the court rules Chrome should be sold.
