Profepa opens proceedings for bear castration in New Mexico

Monterrey, NL. March 3, Following complaints filed by activists, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection ( Profepa ) has initiated, three years after the events, an administrative process against those responsible for the castration and biological death of Chipinque bear 34 .

The so-called bear 34 was removed in August 2020 from the Chipinque Ecological Park, located in the Sierra Madre Oriental within the boundaries of the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park, after a viral video was posted showing the animal approaching a young woman.

At that time, the bear, an endangered species according to Mexican Official Standard 059-2010, was captured and transferred to the facilities of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León ( UANL ), where agronomist Rogelio Carrera Treviño, coordinator of the Wildlife Laboratory of that faculty, made the decision to castrate it.

Following the events, complaints were filed with Profepa (National Prosecutor's Office), and the Attorney General's Office ( FGR ) opened a case file in its Specialized Unit for the Investigation of Environmental Crimes. Martín Vargas Prieto, director of Inspection and Surveillance of Wildlife, Marine Resources, and Coastal Ecosystems, then resigned.
