Teacher Esteban's sentence will set a precedent that violates teachers

Tijuana, July 3. This afternoon's sentencing hearing for teacher Esteban in Mexicali will set a precedent detrimental to the country's teaching profession, education professionals said.

Starting at 8 a.m., hundreds of educators demonstrated on Paseo del Centenario in Tijuana to express their dissatisfaction with the teacher being found guilty of omission for the accidental death of student Martín Damián in November 2023.

The College of Inspectors and Head Teachers of Secondary Schools of the Institute of Educational and Pedagogical Services of Baja California stated in a statement that today will not only deliver a ruling, but also a precedent that will determine whether teachers continue working without institutional support .

Likewise, he demanded "a new legal instrument that defines functions, protects rights, and provides certainty to those who activate the protocols following institutional guidelines," in addition to legal support guaranteed by the employer.

"These protocols, far from protecting and supporting teachers and support staff, have created a state of helplessness and vulnerability that we can no longer tolerate," said the Baja California State Union of Education Workers (SETE).

During the demonstration in front of the ISEP facilities, Monserrat Rodríguez Ruelas, a second-grade teacher at a federal elementary school, considered that an injustice is being committed : "the profession is seriously undermined by the laws and by the changes."

She stated that as a society, we need to evolve and uphold children's rights, but that the system is not doing the same to improve and support teachers.
