Tijuana, November 11.- Given the lack of a migrant protocol in Tijuana , the city council's Human Rights, Migration, and Indigenous Affairs Commission will hold a consultative forum later this month to outline public policies and define the role local authorities should play in addressing the issue, said Edgar Montiel Velázquez .
The council member for the Solidarity Encounter Party (PES) announced that he had invited authorities from all three levels of government, academics, activists, human rights organizations, as well as all stakeholders directly and indirectly involved in the migration issue.
“It is of utmost importance to define the protocol because the municipal authorities are a fundamental part of the issue, and even more so because Tijuana often represents the gateway to crossing into the United States . Otherwise, thousands of people decide to stay in the city, either temporarily or permanently.”
In that sense, he maintained that the Tijuana City Council has addressed the issue and has gotten the various levels of government to look at what is happening at the El Chaparral migrant camp , where hundreds of people have been living for several months in subhuman conditions .
The member of the city council emphasized that the consultative forum represents a first step toward creating the migrant protocol , which he hopes will be approved during the current municipal administration.
