Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour said, "Consultations are underway with the Security Council to hold an emergency session tomorrow, Saturday, to pressure Israel to halt its war of extermination in the Gaza Strip."
Mansour added during a press conference in New York that "Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has requested meetings with the Arab group to discuss developments in Gaza."
He noted that "Abbas distributed a letter on Thursday calling on the international community to restrain Israel from launching a major military campaign, using multiple military divisions to seize complete military control of the Gaza Strip, starting with the largest city, Gaza."
The Palestinian UN envoy praised the positions of the European Union, Britain, Germany, and the Arab and Islamic countries, saying, "We hope they will have an impact on preventing Israel from expanding its aggression in Gaza." He added, "We must work to stop the Israeli madness and allow peace to be the option. What we need is an end to the war, the entry of food and aid, peace, an end to the occupation, and the independence of the State of Palestine."
In a related development, Agence France-Presse quoted three diplomatic sources as saying that the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on Saturday to discuss the Israeli plan to seize control of Gaza City.
The same sources noted that the meeting, scheduled for 7:00 PM GMT, will be held at the request of several Security Council members, amid growing international concern over the Israeli plan.
