The US issues a travel alert for 30 Mexican states.

Mexico City, Mexico. The U.S. State Department released its annual travel advisory update for Mexico this weekend, recommending that citizens avoid visiting or take special precautions when traveling to 30 of the country's 32 states. The Biden administration has only recommended that travel to Campeche and Yucatán be safe.

In the update, the U.S. government is urging its citizens, as it did last year, not to travel to Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas due to their high crime and kidnapping rates. It also recommends that travelers reconsider travel to Baja California, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos, Sonora, and Chiapas, which have seen their U.S. safety ratings worsen and appear on this list for the first time.

Only Durango improved its rating, leaving the group of states to which Washington is urging travelers to reconsider travel and joining the list of states to which the State Department is urging travelers to take the greatest precautions.

“Violent crime—such as homicides, kidnappings, carjackings, and robberies—is widespread and common in Mexico. The U.S. government has limited capacity to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted. In many states, local emergency services are limited outside the state capital or major cities,” the State Department warns
